Serpil Delice’s journey with theatre began during her high school years. As a middle schooler, she admired theatre deeply but was a shy and introverted child. In high school, she noticed that only the top-performing students were accepted into the drama club, and regular students weren’t even invited to auditions. Undeterred, Serpil wrote a short play, cast her friends, and invited the school’s literature teachers to watch their performance. Her bold initiative paid off, and she, along with several classmates, was accepted into the drama club. Looking back, she is still amazed at her courage and determination to challenge the system.

Despite not receiving formal theatre training, Serpil has honed her craft through invaluable experiences, working on projects with esteemed teachers and actors in both Turkey and London. She has always sought to grow and evolve, learning from every opportunity.

Her professional theatre journey began in 2003, when a chance encounter with a notice in Dalston led her to join a newly forming Turkish-speaking theatre group. This marked the start of a 17-year adventure with Alaturka Theatre, where she became a key figure in the group’s productions.

One of Serpil’s proudest achievements is her role in Mahmut and Yezida, directed by Aylin Bozok. Portraying Yezida’s mother, she embodied the character’s pain with extraordinary depth, delivering a heartfelt performance that deeply resonated with audiences. For the entirety of the two-hour play, she remained motionless on a platform, channeling every emotion into the climactic monologue. The feedback she received confirmed that her raw, powerful portrayal had left a lasting impression. The role was so impactful that it took her some time to recover from its emotional weight.

Serpil is passionate about creating meaningful theatre that addresses socially relevant topics. Her work often focuses on themes such as women’s rights, racism, and the challenges and opportunities of immigrant life. She aims to develop high-quality productions that inspire, and transport audiences into the world of the play, even if only for a few hours.

In addition to her passion for theatre, Serpil’s professional life includes work in tourism and real estate. She also enjoys dancing as a hobby, finding joy and creative expression beyond the stage.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges to the theatre world, with reduced investment and the dissolution of many groups. For Serpil, this period created a profound longing for the vibrant theatre scene of the past. She recalls the joy of creating productions, especially those born from improvisation, and is determined to rekindle that spirit.

Serpil Delice’nin tiyatro serüveni lise yıllarında başladı. Ortaokuldayken tiyatroya büyük bir hayranlık duymasına rağmen utangaç ve içine kapanık bir çocuktu. Lisede, yalnızca “süper lise” öğrencilerinin drama kulübüne kabul edildiğini ve klasik lise öğrencilerinin seçmelere dahi davet edilmediğini fark etti. Bu durumdan yılmayan Serpil, kısa bir oyun yazdı, arkadaşlarını oyuncu olarak seçti ve okulun edebiyat öğretmenlerini performanslarını izlemeye davet etti. Cesur girişimi sonuç verdi ve kendisi de sınıf arkadaşlarıyla birlikte drama kulübüne kabul edildi. Geriye dönüp baktığında, sisteme meydan okuma cesaretine ve kararlılığına hala hayranlık duyuyor.

Serpil, resmi bir tiyatro eğitimi almamasına rağmen, Türkiye ve Londra’da saygın yǒnetmenler ve oyuncularla birlikte çalışarak edindiği değerli deneyimler sayesinde sanatını geliştirdi. Her zaman büyümeyi ve gelişmeyi, her fırsattan yeni şeyler öğrenmeyi amaçladı.

Londra’daki tiyatro serüveni, 2003 yılında Dalston’da bir ilanla tesadüfen karşılaşması ve yeni kurulan bir Türkçe tiyatro grubuna katılmasıyla başladı. Bu, Alaturka Tiyatrosu ile 17 yıllık bir maceranın başlangıcı oldu ve grup prodüksiyonlarında önemli bir figür haline geldi.

Serpil’in en gurur duyduğu başarılarından biri, Aylin Bozok’un yönettiği “Mahmut ve Yezida” oyunundaki rolüdür. Yezida’nın annesini canlandırarak karakterin acısını olağanüstü bir derinlikle yansıttı ve izleyicilerde derin yankı uyandıran içten bir performans sergiledi. İki saatlik oyun boyunca hareketsiz kalarak tüm duygularını doruk noktasındaki monoloğa yönlendirdi. Aldığı geri bildirimler, ham ve güçlü tasvirinin kalıcı bir izlenim bıraktığını doğruladı. Rol o kadar etkileyiciydi ki duygusal ağırlığından kurtulması biraz zaman aldı.

Serpil, toplumsal olarak önemli konuları ele alan anlamlı tiyatrolar yaratmaya tutkuludur. Çalışmaları sıklıkla kadın hakları, ırkçılık ve göçmen yaşamının zorlukları ve fırsatları gibi temalara odaklanır. İzleyicileri, yalnızca birkaç saatliğine de olsa oyun dünyasına taşıyan, ilham veren yüksek kaliteli prodüksiyonlar geliştirmeyi hedefliyor.

Tiyatro tutkusuna ek olarak, Serpil’in profesyonel hayatı turizm ve gayrimenkul sektörlerinde çalışmayı da içeriyor. Ayrıca bir hobi olarak dans etmenin keyfini çıkarıyor ve sahne dışında da mutluluk ve yaratıcı ifade buluyor.

COVID-19 pandemisi, azalan yatırım ve birçok grubun dağılmasıyla tiyatro dünyası için önemli zorluklar yarattı. Serpil için bu dönem, geçmişin canlı tiyatro sahnesine derin bir özlem yarattı. Özellikle doğaçlamayla doğan prodüksiyonları yaratmanın sevincini hatırlıyor ve bu ruhu yeniden canlandırmaya kararlı.

Serpil Delice için tiyatro, bir meslekten daha fazlasıdır; oyuncular ve izleyiciler arasında derin bir bağlantıdır, tanımladığı gibi bağımlılık yapıcı ve yeri doldurulamaz bir enerji alışverişidir.
